Grip when the road turns to ice.

Snow Chains

The TractionX ladder — automatic (AX) and manual (MX) self-tensioning snow chains, ABS-compatible, sized for every 4x4 from the Suzuki Jimny to the Land Cruiser. Engineered for Spiti, Ladakh and the cold that snaps cheaper chains — plus cold-weather Spiders retainers that hold tension below -20C.

These are snow chains for cars and SUVs in India built for real Himalayan cold: the TractionX ladder runs automatic (AX) self-tensioning chains and manual (MX) chains, every set is ABS and Traction-Control compatible, and each size maps to a specific vehicle and tyre fitment so a Thar, Fortuner, Jimny or Scorpio-N gets the correct chain for Spiti and Ladakh rather than a generic one-size box.

Fits: Suzuki Jimny · Mahindra Thar

Snow chains for the Mahindra Thar

For a BS4 Mahindra Thar on stock tyres, the chain to order is the TractionX MX120 (Manual) - its fitment list names the Thar (BS4) alongside the Gypsy, Jimny, Bolero and older Sumo and Safari. If your Thar has been modified onto larger-diameter mud-terrains, step up to the TractionX MX180 (Manual), which lists the modified Thar with the Land Cruiser, Prado and Gloster. The deciding factor is your actual tyre size, not the badge: read the sidewall, match it to the model's range, and add the TractionX Spiders retainer so the chain holds tension on the long frozen stretches into Spiti and Lahaul. The MX120 is a manual, hand-fitted chain, so practise fitting it once at home before you need it on ice.

Snow chains for the Toyota Fortuner

The current Toyota Fortuner has two correct options in the TractionX ladder. For a manual, lower-cost fit, the MX160 (Manual) lists the Fortuner with the Hilux, Endeavour, Alturas G4, MU-X and Gloster. If you would rather not crawl under the arch in a blizzard, the AX200 (Automatic) covers the same Fortuner, Endeavour, MU-X, Hilux and Alturas G4 group with a self-tensioning mechanism that pulls tight as you drive off. Both are ABS and Traction-Control compatible and built from the same TUV GS and ONORM V5117-rated alloy. Owners of the older Fortuner generation should check the MX140 instead, which specifically lists the old Fortuner with the Scorpio-N and Pajero Sport - another reason to confirm your tyre size before ordering.

Snow chains for the Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny is a compact, lighter 4x4, and the right chain is the TractionX MX120 (Manual), whose fitment list names the Jimny along with the Gypsy, Bolero and the BS4 Thar. A smaller chain like this is quick to fit by hand and well matched to the Jimny's narrower tyres, which is exactly why fitting by tyre size matters more than vehicle weight. Pair it with the TractionX Spiders retaining system for sub-zero touring so the chain stays centred over uneven ice, and keep speeds low and steady once chained. For deeper background on chains for the Jimny and other light 4x4s, the Snow Chains category page links through to our buying guides.

Snow chains for the Mahindra Scorpio-N

For the Mahindra Scorpio-N in Z2 to Z4 trims, the chain is the TractionX MX140 (Manual), which lists the Scorpio-N Z2-Z4 together with the older Fortuner and the Pajero Sport. It is a manual chain sharing the same multi-alloy steel construction, ABS and Traction-Control compatibility, and TUV GS and ONORM V5117 ratings as the rest of the range. As always, confirm the tyre size on your specific Scorpio-N variant against the MX140 range before ordering - higher trims or aftermarket tyres can shift you to a different model - and add the cold-weather Spiders retainer if your route runs into genuine sub-zero territory such as Spiti or the high Ladakh passes.

Questions, answered

Snow Chains, explained.

Pick by the fitment list printed on each product, not by guesswork. The MX120 (manual) covers the Suzuki Jimny, Maruti Gypsy, and the BS4 Mahindra Thar; the MX140 (manual) covers the Scorpio-N Z2-Z4, old Fortuner and Pajero Sport; the MX160 (manual) and AX200 (automatic) both cover the current Toyota Fortuner, Endeavour, Hilux, MU-X and Alturas G4; the MX180 (manual) and AX220 (automatic) step up to the Land Cruiser, Prado, modified Thar with larger tyres, and similar heavy fitments. Match your exact variant and tyre size to that list before ordering, because the chain has to wrap the rolling tyre, not just the rim.

Both are the same TractionX multi-alloy steel chain; the difference is how they tension. The manual MX chains (MX120, MX140, MX160, MX180) are fitted by hand and re-tensioned after a short roll, which keeps the price lower and is fine if you are willing to kneel at the wheel. The automatic AX chains (AX200, AX220) use a self-tensioning mechanism that pulls the chain tight as you drive off, so there is less crawling under the arch in deep snow or a blizzard. Choose AX if you expect to fit chains repeatedly in bad weather; choose MX if you fit them occasionally and want to save money.

Yes. Every TractionX chain in this range - the MX120, MX140, MX160, MX180, AX200 and AX220 - is listed as compatible with ABS and Traction Control System vehicles, and the mesh pattern is designed to reduce vibration and noise so the electronics are not constantly fighting an uneven chain. You normally leave ABS and traction control switched on; the chain simply gives those systems grip to work with on ice. Always follow your vehicle handbook's guidance on chains and driver aids as well.

Snow chains are sized to the tyre, so the vehicle name is only a starting point. Read the size off your tyre sidewall (for example 265/65 R17) and confirm it falls inside the fitment range for that TractionX model before buying. Two Fortuners on different tyre sizes can need different chains, and a Thar on stock rubber versus oversized mud-terrains is exactly why the BS4 Thar maps to the MX120 while a modified Thar on bigger tyres moves up to the MX180. If your tyre size sits between two models, send us the sidewall code and we will confirm the correct one.

The TractionX Spiders is a cold-weather bungee retainer that clips over a fitted chain to hold even, multi-point tension. In hard Himalayan cold, ordinary rubber tensioners go stiff and let the chain drift, which causes slippage, misalignment and sidewall contact. The Spiders is built to keep its stretch and grip in extreme cold so the chain stays centred over long drives, deep snow and uneven ice. It is an inexpensive add-on (around Rs 3,200) that protects a far more expensive set of chains, and it is the part most people forget until a chain works loose at altitude.

The chains are made from a multi-alloy steel (Boron, Titanium, Manganese, Chromium and Carbon) with an 8-hour heat treatment at 900 C and a carburized, surface-hardened finish (HV 720-780), and they carry TUV GS and ONORM V5117 ratings - all aimed at staying tough rather than going brittle when temperatures crash. The Spiders retaining system is specifically built to keep elasticity and tension below -20 C. That combination is why this range is recommended for sub-zero Spiti and Ladakh winters, where cheaper chains and tensioners tend to fail first.

Fit chains to the driven axle, and on a part-time 4x4 driven in 2WD fit them to the wheels that actually deliver power; when in doubt, follow your owner's manual, which is the final authority for your vehicle. For most touring you only need one pair of chains, so keep them on the axle that pulls. Carry them before you reach the snowline rather than trying to fit them on a sheet of ice, keep your speed low and steady once chained up, and remove them on clear tarmac to protect both the chain and the road surface.
