Build dossier — Mahindra Thar Roxx

The Mahindra Thar Roxx overland build

The 5-door Thar Roxx is the best overland platform Mahindra has made. A longer wheelbase and wider track make it far steadier under a rooftop tent than the 3-door Thar — so you can run a bigger tent, carry more, and worry less about the roof. Here is the gear we fit and field-test on the Roxx for Spiti and Ladakh, with the numbers that matter.

§ 02Reading the Thar Roxx

Why the Thar Roxx changes the overland maths

The 3-door Mahindra Thar is a brilliant overland base with one persistent tax: it is short and narrow, so the moment you put a tent on the roof you raise a high centre of gravity even higher, and you feel it in crosswinds on the Leh highway and on off-camber tracks above Kunzum La. The Thar Roxx removes most of that tax. Its wheelbase is roughly 2,850 mm against the 3-door's 2,450-odd, its track is wider, and it keeps the same body-on-frame ladder chassis and — on the 4XPLOR trims — a genuine low-range transfer case. The result is a vehicle that carries a rooftop tent with markedly more composure.

In practical terms this widens your choices. On a 3-door Thar we steer owners hard toward the lightest tents because every kilo high on the roof matters more on a short wheelbase. On the Roxx that pressure eases: the flagship AutoNest 120 and the hardshell Bison61 sit well on it, and you get the five-door's real interior and boot to carry water, recovery and tools down low where they belong. You are building on a platform that was, for the first time from Mahindra, designed with space and stability in mind rather than pure short-wheelbase agility.

None of this repeals the basic discipline of an overland build — light roof, heavy items low and inside — but the Roxx gives you far more margin to get it right. Treat that margin as permission to carry what you actually need for a self-sufficient Spiti or Ladakh trip, not as licence to stack a heavy fixed rack, a roof box and a tent all at once.

Which tent actually suits a Thar Roxx

For most Roxx owners the honest best answer is the AutoNest 120. It is our fully-automatic hardshell — one button raises and lowers it — so on a vehicle that is finally stable enough to carry a proper tent without drama, you get the fastest, most weatherproof setup we make. Its closed profile is low and aerodynamic for the long highway hauls to the mountains, and its shell shrugs off the snow load that catches softshells out at a high camp.

If you want a hardshell at a friendlier price, the Bison61 is the pick: a clamshell that packs down clean for transit and opens in seconds, well matched to the Roxx's longer roofline. And for owners whose trips lean genuinely cold — winter Spiti, high camps above 3,500 m — the CampTop 300Lux earns its place with dual heater ports designed to take a diesel heater's ducting and an all-season thermal mattress. The Roxx's stability means the 300Lux's extra weight over an ultralight tent is a non-issue where it would have been a real consideration on the 3-door.

The one thing the Roxx does not change is the load principle. A rooftop tent's 300 kg base rating is a static, parked figure — what it sleeps under — not a number you drive around with. Your driving (dynamic) roof load is far lower and includes the crossbars, so match tent-plus-crossbars to your crossbar and roof rating, keep the roof to just the tent while moving, and let the Roxx's generous cabin and boot carry the dense gear. If you want the full load maths worked through, our rooftop-tent buyer's guide walks the dynamic-versus-static distinction with examples.

§ 03Snow-chain fitment

The correct chain for a Thar Roxx is the MX140

The Mahindra Thar Roxx runs 255/60 R19 tyres on the top 4XPLOR trims and 255/65 R18 on the lower trims. Here is the detail most sellers miss: those two sizes have an almost identical overall rolling diameter — 255/60 R19 works out to roughly 789 mm and 255/65 R18 to roughly 789 mm — and snow chains size on the tyre's rolling diameter and section width, not on the rim. So a single chain, the TractionX MX140, is the correct fit for both Roxx variants. It is a manual-fit chain — lay it over the tread, hook the inside, tension the outside — and carries the same TUV GS and ONORM V5117 certification and carburised multi-alloy steel (HV 720–780) as the rest of the TractionX line, so it bites on glare ice, not just soft snow. If you run the Roxx on oversized aftermarket rubber, step up a size and check arch clearance at full lock before you commit.

Snow chains, awning, water and recovery

Snow chains are the item people skip and regret. On the Thar Roxx the correct size is the TractionX MX140, and it fits both the 19-inch and 18-inch factory tyres for the diameter reason set out in the fitment box below. Carry them on any Himalayan trip from October to April even when the forecast looks clear — a single overnight snowfall on the Kunzum or Baralacha approach turns a routine drive into a recovery, and a set of chains in the boot is the difference between continuing and being towed. Fit them to the driven axle before you need them, not on an ice gradient in the dark.

An awning is the comfort upgrade that turns the Roxx from a vehicle you sleep on into a basecamp, and here the five-door's length pays off: the 270° SaberLight wraps around a longer flank to give you a bigger covered kitchen and living area, up in under two minutes, off the same crossbar system as the tent. Pair it with a 26-litre HydroX pressurised water tank carried low in the vehicle — clean water on tap and, just as importantly, ballast in exactly the right place for stability.

For recovery, build from the ground up rather than buying a winch first. A pair of traction boards and a kinetic recovery rope solve the overwhelming majority of real situations a Roxx finds — bogged in Rann salt, axle-deep in a Spiti snowdrift, losing traction on a wet Northeast climb. Both pack small and are rated for the cold the Roxx genuinely sees. Add a ThermaEvo diesel heater for the nights and you have a Thar Roxx that is ready for the routes that matter; our guided Spiti expedition runs exactly this kind of build through the Himalayan winter with a support vehicle in the convoy.

§ 05Thar Roxx build — FAQ

Questions, answered.

For most Thar Roxx owners the AutoNest 120 (auto-deploying hardshell) or the Bison61 (hardshell clamshell) are the best all-round choices. Because the 5-door Roxx has a longer wheelbase and wider track than the 3-door Thar, it carries these tents with far more stability, so you are not forced onto the very lightest tent. For genuinely cold winter trips, choose the CampTop 300Lux for its dual heater ports and thermal mattress.

The TractionX MX140. The Thar Roxx runs 255/60 R19 on the top 4XPLOR trims and 255/65 R18 on lower trims, and both have an almost identical rolling diameter of about 789 mm — and chains size on rolling diameter, not the rim — so the MX140 is correct for both. It is TUV GS and ONORM V5117 certified and ABS-compatible.

Yes, noticeably. The Roxx's longer wheelbase (roughly 2,850 mm vs the 3-door's ~2,450 mm) and wider track lower the effect of weight high on the roof, so it feels calmer in crosswinds and on off-camber tracks with a tent fitted. The same load discipline still applies — keep the driving roof load to just the tent and crossbars — but the Roxx gives you more margin.

Yes. A sensible Roxx build is a rooftop tent up top, a 270° awning off the side, a HydroX water tank and recovery gear carried low and inside, and a diesel heater for cold camps. The five-door's larger cabin and boot make it easier to keep the heavy items low — which is exactly what keeps a tall 4x4 stable on the trail.

For a single rooftop tent, a set of tent-rated aluminium crossbars is usually all you need — a full platform rack adds weight high on the vehicle for capacity most tent users do not require. Match the crossbars to your tent's weight and your roof's dynamic (driving) load rating, and keep everything else low in the vehicle.
