The Best Rooftop Tent for Toyota Hilux in India

The best rooftop tent for a Toyota Hilux in India is the Bison61 hardshell (Rs 204,990) — the Hilux is a big, stable pickup that carries our heaviest, toughest tents without flinching, and the Bison61's one-piece stamped aluminium shell is built for exactly that. Want the biggest bed instead of the toughest shell? The CampTop 400Max (Rs 164,990) gives you a 7ft x 7ft floor. We've fitted both on Hilux roofs and bed bars from Spiti to the Rann. Here's how to choose.

§ 01The picks

Every pick, and why it's the one.

Every tent below physically fits the Hilux — we've confirmed it. The Hilux is one of the few platforms in our range that can carry literally any tent we sell, so the choice is about how you camp, not whether it fits. Here are the five we'd put on a Hilux, ranked by who they're for.

Hardshell vs softshell on a Hilux: what the extra capacity buys you

The Hilux changes the maths. On a lighter platform we're always watching roof load and how a tall tent affects the centre of gravity — but the Hilux is a big, stable pickup with the payload to carry our heaviest hardshells without flinching. That's why our default Hilux recommendation is a hardshell. The Bison61's one-piece stamped aluminium shell and honeycomb base shrug off hail, branches and years of UV, and on a Hilux you never pay a stability penalty for that mass. A hardshell also sets up in seconds — gas struts or a clamshell pop — which matters when you're rolling into a Spiti campsite at dusk in the cold.

Softshells still earn their place. The Leopard41 weighs only 41 kg, which keeps your roof load tiny and makes it easy to move between vehicles or lift off solo. The CampTop 300Lux, with its dual heater ports and all-season mattress, is a genuine cold-weather softshell if budget is the priority. The honest trade-off: softshells need their cover unzipped and the tent unfolded, so setup is a couple of minutes longer, and the folded fabric sits taller in the wind than a slim hardshell. On a Hilux, where capacity isn't the constraint, we'd spend up for the hardshell unless weight or price is your hard limit.

Mounting it: bed bars, roller shutters and canopies

You don't bolt a rooftop tent to the Hilux cab roof — you build a bed platform. Our CrossTrail aluminium pressure-diecast bars (Rs 29,990) are the Hilux bed crossbars we fit most; they give a strong, level base over the tub for any tent in this guide, including the big CampTop 400Max. Getting the bars right is the part people underestimate: the mistake we see is a tent mounted on flimsy bars that drum and flex on washboard. Diecast bars don't do that.

Think about what lives under the tent, too. The Hilux Expedition Series manual roller shutter (Rs 83,990) seals and secures the bed so your recovery kit and duffels ride locked and dry beneath the tent. If you want a fully enclosed, weatherproof bed, the aluminium single-piece canopy (Rs 179,990) or the steel canopy (Rs 159,990) turn the tub into a hard, lockable box — and the tent still mounts on top. Match the tent and the bed solution as one system and the Hilux becomes a proper expedition rig.

§ 04FAQ

Questions, answered.

For most Hilux owners it's the Bison61 hardshell at Rs 204,990 — its one-piece stamped aluminium shell and honeycomb base are built for a pickup with this much load capacity, and it sets up in seconds. If you'd rather have the biggest sleeping area than the toughest shell, the CampTop 400Max (Rs 164,990) gives you a 7ft x 7ft floor that only a big rig like the Hilux can carry comfortably. Both are field-proven on Hilux beds.

Plan on roughly Rs 112,990 to Rs 235,000 depending on type. The lightweight Leopard41 softshell starts at Rs 112,990; the low-profile CampTop Aero-V hardshell is Rs 138,990; the big-bed CampTop 400Max is Rs 164,990; the flagship Bison61 hardshell is Rs 204,990; and the motorised AutoNest 120 tops the range at Rs 235,000. Budget separately for bed bars — our CrossTrail crossbars are Rs 29,990.

Yes. The 400Max is fitment-confirmed for the Hilux, Scorpio-N, Fortuner and Defender — the big rigs. It's deliberately NOT offered for the Thar or Jimny because at a 7ft x 7ft floor and 400 kg load rating it's simply too big for them. The Hilux, with its long, wide bed and high payload, is one of the platforms it was designed around. Mount it on CrossTrail bars over the tub.

On a Hilux we usually say hardshell. The truck has the capacity to carry our heaviest shells with no stability penalty, so you get the durability of stamped aluminium and seconds-fast setup for free. Go softshell only if you want to keep roof load minimal (the 41 kg Leopard41) or save money (the CampTop 300Lux). The trade-off with softshells is a slightly longer setup and a taller folded profile in the wind.

Yes — the AutoNest 120 (Rs 235,000) is a premium motorised, electric pop-up hardshell that opens and closes at the touch of a button. It's fitment-confirmed for the Hilux. We like it for cold-weather and frequent-use rigs because there are no struts to fight and no folding in the dark — you press a button and the tent deploys. It's the most convenient tent we sell, and the Hilux roof handles its weight easily.

For the Hilux we fit TractionX chains: the AX220 (Rs 19,460) is the auto-tensioning set rated for Hilux and Land Cruiser, the MX180 (Rs 10,788) suits a modified Hilux on 33in tyres, and the MX160 (Rs 10,620) covers standard Hilux and Fortuner fitments. All are TUV GS and ONORM V5117 certified and ABS-compatible. A loaded rooftop tent adds weight up high, so good chains matter even more on icy passes.
