Rooftop tent for the Mahindra Thar

The Thar is the default Indian overlanding platform, and the tent you choose depends on whether it wears a roof rack or a bed rack and how much you have loaded elsewhere. Hardshell vs softshell, and how to choose by use case

Hardshells and softshells solve different problems. A hardshell, like the automatic AutoNest 120, the Bison61 or the CampTop Aero-V, lives inside a rigid aluminium clamshell: it deploys fastest, seals best against rain and wind, sits more aerodynamically for long highway days, and is the right call if you move camp daily or drive far between stops. A softshell, like the Leopard41, CampTop 300Lux, CampTop 250 or CampTop 400Max, folds out over the side of the vehicle to deliver a noticeably larger sleeping footprint for the money, which is why softshells dominate when you want maximum room or the lowest price per sleeper and you tend to base-camp for a few nights at a time. For winter Himalaya use, layer that decision with cold-weather features: the CampTop 300Lux adds dual heater ports for a portable diesel heater and a thermal-control mattress, so a softshell can absolutely run sub-zero when it is specced for it. Decide by how you travel first, then by how many you sleep, then confirm the loaded weight against your roof rating.

Choose hardshell if you camp fast, move daily and drive long highway stints; choose softshell if you want maximum room and the lowest price per sleeper.

Capacity tracks the floor size, not the brand. The CampTop 400Max has a 7 ft x 7 ft sleeping area, one of the largest in its class, comfortable for a family or group of up to four. The AutoNest 120 is a fully automatic tent that opens and closes in under 60 seconds at the touch of a button, with no struts to wrestle or fabric to fight. The Bison61 hardshell deploys in seconds using RapiDeplo, and the Leopard41 softshell also uses RapiDeplo for fast single-person setup. Most other softshells take a little longer because you unfold the extension and clip the ladder, but they reward that time with a larger floor. Tent weight decides which vehicle can safely carry it and how hard it is to mount.
